Benefits are the political flavour of the week, folks, as Sir Keir Starmer's Labour government pretends to get tough on the benefits' bonanza, in a week in which much has been said about the need to target the freebies—cars and gadgets—that the rest of us couldn't dream of affording. These giveaways via Personal Independence Payments are supposed to help the genuinely vulnerable, but it's turned into a taxpayer-funded circus in which routes to being able to do it yourself are shared on social media platforms like TikTok.
Note how he doesn't exactly sound like the Britain of old himself.
It boils my blood, frankly, that we're expected to fork out cash for people citing conditions like anxiety and autism—issues that, not long ago, were considered personal challenges to endure, rather than a golden ticket to taxpayer-funded comforts. We've all got our crosses to bear, haven't we? The system, as Starmer rightly admits, is wide open to abuse. But let's not kid ourselves; Labour's laser-focused attention on benefit scroungers conveniently sidesteps the elephant stomping around the room.
The real outrage isn't the British families gaming the system—though that deserves addressing—but rather the tidal wave of foreigners flooding into Britain expressly to exploit our absurd generosity. Starmer and co. seem remarkably chilled about torching £5.4 billion annually—£14 million a day, let’s not forget—on illegal migrants.
Then there's the 'Boriswave' of legal immigration—cheers, Boris! Konstantin Kisin nailed it when he called out Johnson for washing his hands of responsibility, muttering feebly about being overruled by some quango. Sorry, mate, that's not good enough. The sheer scale of arrivals—Hong Kongers and Ukrainians included—doesn't explain why we let in so many. We had the equivalent of a whole Birmingham arriving last year alone. I don’t know about you, but I didn’t vote Brexit to see migration pushed even higher than it already was.
The Ukraine and Hong Kong excuse simply doesn’t wash, look at this data. Boris ought to be on bended knee to beg for forgiveness from those of us who voted for him in 2019 with the promise of a new Brexit moment in which we would prioritise Britain for the first time in a generation. Look at the data for yourself, the Ukrainian and Hong Kong episode doesn’t explain them.
And that quango I mentioned that Boris wields like a cowardly shield to justify his time in office a moment ago? It’s called the Migration Advisory Committee, only, here’s a clip from the BBC’s Panorama in which the Chair on that committee makes clear it is untenable for Boris to blame the Migration Advisory Committee when the most consequential policies were the ones he introduced in opposition to the MAC’s own advice.
Boris continued what we voted Brexit for, a diet of migration that’ll accept lower wages in areas such as health and social care, don’t forget we’re capping the number of doctors we can train here and importing from abroad instead too. As well as students being able to stay for two years after their degrees, the Committee said it would become a route for people to ‘study’ but actually just to work in Britain. They did it anyway. Take a stroll around your local town. Listen carefully. The chatter in foreign tongues from Uber Eats and Deliveroo drivers, many undoubtedly working under the table, tells a story Labour doesn't want you talking about. Cultural enrichment? Spare me. Many newcomers bring with them values at odds with our own, particularly regarding the rights of gays and girls. And yet, they're showered with support from a system that treats born-and-bred Brits like second-class citizens.
Next time you're staring down your sky-high energy bills or weeping over yet another council tax hike, remember where your money's going. It's time to call out this madness. Enough is enough.
40 nationalities are claiming benefits at a greater rate per head of population than British citizens. Three nationalities – Congolese, Iraqis and Afghans – are claiming benefits at four times the rate of British people.
And the story of a jobless Somalian family went viral this week, in which the benefit-claiming family were downgraded from a £2 million house to a £1.3 million house, poor dears, I don’t know how they’ll ever cope, can you?
