Imagine you’re a young lad from Crewe or Consett, looking at a career in the forces. You want to serve your country, learn a trade, and maybe stand for something bigger than yourself in a modern world in which everything is so instant and vapid. Then you turn on the news and see Sir Keir Starmer swanning around Paris, grinning like a schoolboy who’s just been patted on the head by Emmanuel Macron.

The “Paris Declaration.” It sounds grand, doesn’t it? Starmer has committed British troops to a “peace force” in Ukraine. “Military hubs” in Donetsk. “Reassurance forces” in Kyiv. He’s found an “iron-cast commitment” to defend a border 1,500 miles away with your life and your tax money. Yet, when it comes to the invasion at Dover, he’s about as firm as a wet paper towel.

Let me be clear, because the usual bad-faith brigade will try to twist this. This is not an argument against Ukraine, nor against our armed forces, nor against young men and women choosing to serve. Quite the opposite. Those who put on the uniform — like my late grandfather before them — are heroes in my eyes. They deserve honour, protection, and a country worthy of their sacrifice.

Nor is it unreasonable for Britain to support allies abroad. A serious country can walk and chew gum. But what Starmer is proposing isn’t solidarity — it’s sanctimony. He has found moral clarity, political will, and unlimited rhetoric for a border 1,500 miles away, while treating Britain’s own border as an embarrassing inconvenience best ignored.

That is the problem. Not Ukraine. Not the Army. Not the young lad from Consett or Crewe thinking about signing up. The problem is a political class that will happily wrap itself in borrowed heroism overseas while abandoning the very people who do the fighting — and the country they come home to.

If you’re thinking of signing up, you have to ask: Why? Why risk your life for a government that treats our own borders like a suggestion, but treats a frozen trench in Eastern Europe like the last stand of civilisation?

This weekend, I sat on the Politics North sofa with Labour’s North East Mayor, Kim McGuinness.

The consensus in that studio was the same as it always is in Westminster: the public should pay up, shut up, and be grateful.

I didn’t go there to nod along. I went there to deliver a few home truths.

You can watch the full exchange here, but let me break down the four points they really didn’t want to hear.

1. British Families First

We are currently paying Universal Credit to 1.26 million foreign nationals. Let that sink in.

At a time when British families are being told there’s no money—when the winter fuel allowance is being snatched away from our pensioners—we are subsidising the rest of the world to the tune of billions.

I said it on air, and I’ll say it again: It takes the Michael out of the British taxpayer. It is time we prioritised our own. Reform’s plan proposed £300 million in support for British families, Labour’s plan is billions for foreign ones.

2. Net Zero is Industrial Suicide

The other guests spoke about “Green Energy” as if it’s a magical money tree.

Tell that to the factory workers in County Durham losing their jobs right now. Our manufacturers are being crushed by the highest industrial electricity prices in Europe, all sacrificed on the altar of Net Zero.

This isn’t an “economic transition.” It is deindustrialisation by design.

3. The Great EV Betrayal

For years, you were told to “do the right thing.” Buy an electric car. Save the planet. “It won’t be taxed,” they promised.

Well, you’ve been sold a pup.

Now that the government needs cash to plug the black hole in their welfare bill, they are coming for your electric car too. It was never about the environment. It was always about control and revenue.

4. Labour’s Hypocrisy on Children

This was the moment the room went silent.

Labour politicians love to preach about how much they “care” for vulnerable children. They weep crocodile tears in Parliament.

But when I asked Kim McGuinness why her Labour government refuses to fairly fund the councils that actually look after those children, she had no answer.

They are happy to mandate statutory services, but they are nowhere to be found when the bill arrives. And boy is that bill growing by the day, as more and more people meet the liberalised threshold for support.

The reaction in the studio was exactly what you’d expect: uncomfortable shifting in seats and defensive waffle.

But the reaction from the public has been very different. Because out here in the real world, people are sick of being lied to.

They know that a country that prioritises foreign nationals over its own citizens, ideology over industry, and tax over truth is a country heading in the wrong direction.

Yesterday changed everything. In just 24 hours we learned of a slew of incidents that marked a hammer blow to the morale of the British public. I asked online for the public to say his name after learning that ITV’s flagship news show didn’t mention his alleged murder once: Wayne Broadhurst. A binman. A husband. A local lad who tried to help — murdered on his dog walk. His alleged killer? A 22-year-old Afghan who came here illegally in a lorry, then granted leave to remain by our own government. He has since been charged and a case will take place. No coverage on ITV. No candlelit vigils. No lectures from politicians about ‘the epidemic of violence.’ Just silence.

A 37-year-old man was brutally stabbed to death inside a Lloyds Bank branch in Derby by 47-year-old Haybe Cabdiraxmaan Nur, a small-boat migrant who had entered Britain illegally and was later granted asylum. A man stabbed whilst doing something as ordinary as visiting his bank. The attack, carried out in broad daylight, came after Nur had openly threatened to “kill 500 people” and displayed violent behaviour that was never properly acted on by the authorities. His conviction for murder and life sentence with a minimum term of 25 years expose yet again how Britain’s asylum system is failing to protect the public. Ordinary citizens can’t even queue in a bank without fearing that another “known to authorities” migrant might strike. It’s a devastating reminder that our country’s borders and institutions are being run with reckless complacency.

“Wayne deserved better. Britain deserves better.”
